Dear Future Administrator, I’m Dr. Mark. I've been a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and a superintendent in three states over a thirty-nine year period. When I started my career as a teacher, I had no idea where this profession would lead me. Initially, I didn't have any aspiration to become an administrator. All I wanted was to be a teacher and a football coach in a Class A high school. I’m sure you have heard about “the best laid plans.” Despite my original goals new opportunities presented themselves. I’m not sure that I recognized the significance of these opportunities at the time but I was willing to take a risk and as Robert Frost said “that made all the difference.” How I Became An AdministratorMy administrative journey began during my first year of teaching. At a staff Christmas party, I met a man who was part of the C.S. Mott Foundation Fellowship Program in Flint, Michigan. This Program provided a tax free $5,000 stipend to earn a M.A. degree in Community Education or Educational Administration in a year’s time. I got excited just hearing about the Program. Since I was a first year teacher, it seemed like a long shot. I applied for the Program anyway. It was a very competitive process as you might imagine. I still vividly remember the first interview question and my mind went blank. One of the professors felt sorry for me and asked me to tell them about myself. Wow! Somehow I was accepted into the Program. I resigned my teaching position at the end of the school year and stupidly did not request a leave of absence. That summer I earned ten credit hours at Central Michigan University. The Viet Nam war was just beginning and soon my draft status changed. I no longer had my teacher deferment. Now what? I resigned from the Mott Program and eventually found a teaching/coaching position thirty miles from where we lived. I started my new job two days before school started. I left my administrative certification unfinished rather than risk the draft but I still had work to do. Taking these administrative classes along with the Foundation experiences, motivated me to continue taking night classes and Saturday graduate classes that school year. I completed my M.A. in Educational Administration the following summer in a record time. Now that I think about it, it was quite an achievement. With my new found certificate and confidence. I applied to be an assistant principal, athletic director and part time teacher in a rural northern Michigan 7-12 junior high school of 600 students. I was twenty-three years old. This whole process just happened. I sure didn’t plan it. I couldn’t have even dreamed it. The rest of my career is history. I continued to take graduate classes to obtain an Educational Specialist degree (Ed.S.) and eventually an Educational Doctorate degree (Ed.D.) while moving up the administrative ladder. I was fortunate to have a supportive wife who was willing to move with each new opportunity. Each move created a new risk and new set of challenges. The risks paid off for us. During my many years as an administrator, I learned a few things. If you have the desire and ambition to move out of the classroom and into administration, I believe I can help you in my E-Book “Transitioning From Teacher To Administrator.” Now you can find out how to ...
Are You a Leader? One of the greatest challenges facing educators today is hiring highly qualified teachers for the classroom and selecting the administrators who provide quality leadership for all students. As an educator for over thirty-eight years, I have witnessed phenomenal growth in both areas. Education today faces increased accountability for student achievement, increased scrutiny at the state and federal levels (NCLB), teacher shortages in critical areas as math, special education, foreign languages and science, and a shallow pool of talented administrators. These and other variables continue to keep k-12 education a national political agenda issue. Schools Need You!School districts today need additional assistance to find and hire the professional educators necessary to keep American schools competitive in a global society. Education currently is experiencing a very shallow administrative pool. Top candidates are not entering the administrative ranks in sufficient numbers. There are several reasons for this. Low salary is an issue. The daily per diem rate for a classroom teacher is often nearly the same as it is for an entry-level administrator. Teachers today see the lack of parental, legislative and community support of school administrators and school personnel in general. Media bashing of education is another factor. These factors along with an extended school calendar and a longer workday influence many excellent teachers not to leave the classroom. Many candidates have difficulty finding their first administrative job and some have problems advancing within the administrative ranks. The reason for this failure often is the lack of understanding of how to navigate the process of transitioning from the classroom to administration and once an administrator, how to acclimate successfully in the new administrative position. Once you read and follow "Transitioning From Teacher to Administrator" you will not have any of these problems. Included in the eBook:
