HAC is currently seeking a SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER. Under the supervision of the HAC Director of Special Education and Site Educational Director, The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing developmentally appropriate class room activities in an innovative educational setting based on established performance standards and best practices. S/He is the primary educator responsible for ensuring that students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) receive appropriate and consistent instruction and services as prescribed by their IEP.

Responsibilities include:
o Planning and delivery of one-on-one, small group, and whole classroom plans and instruction as required by students’ IEPs;
o Utilizing developmentally appropriate, rigorous curricula, and instructional materials to present students with new ideas and concepts through a variety of strategies that inspire and guide them to explore, express and uncover new ideas;
o Ensuring ongoing communication and collaboration with parents, the HAC IEP Coordinator, HAC Clinical Services Unit, and administrative team regarding educational treatment of child;
o Providing consultation and support for parents of special needs students in general education classrooms and help to facilitate positive collaboration between parents and teaching staff;
o Collaborating with classroom team in the development and completion of daily notes, monthly/quarterly/annual reports, behavioral schedules and social skills curriculum for special needs students in general education classrooms;
o Maintaining student records regarding special education issues and preparing reports for regulatory agencies;
o Attending and participating in IEP meetings, IDT meetings, staff meetings and Staff Development training/workshops as required;
o Participating in planning and implementation of field trips;
o Actively seeking professional growth by maintaining current knowledge and skills pertinent to the position.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

o Minimum 1-2 years of prior experience working as a Special Education Teacher in a Preschool classroom (preferably in an urban setting);
o Must possess a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education;
o Must have NYS Certification in Special Education and Early Childhood Education;
o Ability to demonstrate verbally basic clinical/diagnostic understanding of the identified child’s needs;
o Knowledge of best practices, methods and techniques in educating preschool children with special needs and other significant disabilities;
o Knowledge of assistive technology for students with disabilities;
o Knowledge of federal and state mandates for students identified as special education students;
o Knowledge of procedures and regulations related to IEP development and timelines;
o Ability to effectively communicate with staff and build positive partnerships with parents;
o Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing positive behavioral support plans;
o Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills;
o Fluency in English;
o Bilingual PREFERRED: English/Spanish or English/French or English/an African dialect;
o Advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; internet navigation; email; database applications;
o Be an enthusiastic, energetic team player, have a demonstrated creative ability and possess a supportive, positive, and patient attitude towards children;
o Ability to remain calm and composed under stress;
o Possess basic mathematical/quantitative ability;
o Ability to evaluate/interpret information and make independent judgments/decisions;
o Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules and policy and procedures manuals;
o Ability to lift a child 35 – 40 pounds (able to lift as many as twenty children in a day if needed).

Additional Requirements:
o All center employees are required to be fingerprinted, cleared through the Statewide Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, clear of any criminal record and/or conviction, and comply with the Health code and ACS requirements as a condition of hiring and continued employment;
o Must pass a physical examination
