No experience is necessary. Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Have a valid TN teaching license, a reciprocal teaching certificate from another state, or meet TN transitional licensure requirements (degree in Special Education – Hearing Impaired, 24 credit hours in Special Education – Hearing Impaired, or passing the Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students Praxis II).
• Proficient sign language skills
• Be highly qualified according to NCLB guidelines.
• Have a Bachelor’s degree or higher with a minimum GPA of 2.5; 2.75 for elementary.
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Pass a criminal background check.
• Master’s Degree in Education or closely related field from an accredited institution, with specialization in Deaf Education; specialization/endorsement in other content areas may also be required.
• Experience teaching/working with children in an educational environment who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing.
• Advanced sign language skills, including American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency.
• Knowledge of and ability to follow mandated compliance standards established by District, State, or Federal regulations.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational practices associated with students who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing.
• Knowledge of Deaf culture, the local Deaf community, and local resources available for the Deaf community.
• Ability to communicate effectively with Deaf/hard-of-hearing children.
• Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.
• Ability to participate effectively in team setting to plan curriculum, prepare lessons, modify instructional material according to the individual needs of the student.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
